Finding time for yourself in a busy college schedule

BUZZZZZZ! 5:30a.m. Drag out of bed. Get dressed for work. Grab books and clothes for classes. Make sure there is some change for a quick lunch at the snack machine. Walk the dog. Rush to work. At 11:30, change in the bathroom at work. Race across town, avoiding the hot spots for cops. Franctically spend 30 minutes looking for a parking spot ten miles from class. Hike across the mountains of campus, through the crowds of students. WATCH OUT! As bicycles come zooming left and right. Rush through lectures til 8:00. Rush back to the car to run across town to a student study session. At 11:00, head home to catch a quick bite from the leftover pizza in the fridge. Walk the dog. Change clothes to go back to work to finish the inventory while there are no customers around. At 1:00a.m., drag back into bed to sleep for the four hours until it starts again. Ahh, the life of college student.

It is very difficult not to get swept up in activities, work and class while in college. There is hardly any time to sit down let alone try and relax. Everything seems to be going 500 miles a second and everyone seems to want you here or there.

The cliche life of partying and drinking in college does happen. Of course, there wouldn’t be a cliche if it didn’t. However, for most college students the partying is saved for a particular time and date especially for those co-eds that work to support themselves.

As a college student that had to work to pay bills I had no time to fool around. I knew going into college that I would only have four years and that was it. With financial aid that only lasted that long, I had to make sure that I graduated on time with good grades.

I worked as a manager for a franchise bagel company in town. Every morning I was up before the rest of the town and I went sleep when most of my neighbors had been sleeping for hours. I’ve been asked if I regret not partying as much or hitting the club scene as often as my friends. I can honestly say I would not take back any of my college years or activities. I accomplished the goals I set for myself and that in itself is an amazing feeling.

I barely ate for four years, slept on average 3.5 hours a night, worked til I couldn’t stand anymore, and studied for two days straight at times. But it was worth it. As I look at my friends who partied and clubbed that are still in school trying to finish up four year degrees in six years, I almost smile to myself. It was a struggle, there is no doubt about it. It was difficult to drag myself out of bed and do the same thing over and over.

I found that keeping busy kept me motivated and allowed the slack-ass in me to disappear. At points, I wanted to break down but I would not allow myself. I did go out and have fun, don’t get me wrong. I met a lot of people and socialized when I got the chance. But nothing would deter me from walking across that stage with a degree in my hand.

In retrospect, a busy college schedule was what I needed. Not everyone is the same, so PARTY ON YOU ROCKSTARS! But for those that feel the need to focus, my hat goes off to you. You can achieve it if you put your mind to it.
