In the 1930s a gentleman named Harland Sanders opened a cafe in the middle of the depression. He experienced a degree of success and was given the honorary name “Colonel” by the Governor of Kentucky because of his valuable contributions to the state’s cuisine.

By the mid-1960s there are hundreds of KFC operations going strong and the company begins to go international. In 1966 the company entered the New York Stock Exchange as a public corporation. The corporation is later acquired by Heublein Foods, Inc. in 1971 and has since exchanged hands several times before its current ownership by Yum! Brands.
