Why opening a coffee shop is a great business opportunity – Part 1
The number one reason to open a coffee shop is great income potential. In a successful coffee shop business, you can net between $2,000 and $5,000 on a monthly basis. Another great reason to open a coffee shop is that a smaller dollar investment is required for startup
According to a 2001 survey for National Coffee Association, over 100 million people drink coffee daily. It is estimated that over 300 million cups of coffee are drank in the U.S. alone. Just think of the income potential. That is why according to Starbuck’s 2006 annual report, that franchise opened 6 new shops a day. Caribou Coffee added 48 new shops in 2007. It’s not only the big companies making money. By the end of 2005 over 57% of all coffee shops were independently owned.
Not everyone who opens a coffee shop will succeed. There are several factors that contribute to one’s success. Finding the perfect location is the most important first step. If you have a shop that will see a lot of traffic you increase your chances to have a profitable business.
Another contributing factor to your business success is design of your shop and the layout of your workspace. If you shop is not inviting, it will be less attractive to your customers. Also, if your workspace is not laid out properly, it can actually cost you money. Your goal should be to serve the customer as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Make sure you purchase the correct equipment to serve your customer’s needs. In the end, if these are not done properly in the beginning, they can end up costing you money instead of providing you more revenue.
Once you have the perfect spot for your shop and you have the inside lay out where you need it, you can start on your inventory. Carefully plan your initial supply. You may want to order quite a bit of your main coffee, but order sparingly on your gourmet flavors. This will give you a chance to see what your customer’s like. If funds allow, a light breakfast and lunch menu may help increase your sells.
Before you start any new business, you should do your research. I typed in “how to start a coffee shop” on Ask.com and received 3,655,000 entries. Even allowing for duplicate entries, there seems to be a lot of information available. There are plenty of people willing to share their knowledge. Some of it is for free and some will cost a few hundred dollars. However, your research will pay off if your business succeeds.
