Field-tested business consultant shares secrets of choosing the right franchise

Farmington Hills, Mich. – Even after one has made the initial decision to buy into a franchise opportunity, there is an endless checklist of things to consider before choosing ‘the right one.’

Recognized franchise expert and President of Finance and Development of Wireless Toyz; one of the country’s fastest growing companies; Richard Simtob recommends a cold, hard look at every one of his top 10 franchise selection criteria before making the leap.

There is one acid test Simtob prescribes to everyone who comes to him for advice about choosing a franchise opportunity: “Make sure you select a business which you are truly passionate about,” says Simtob, a 38-year-old entrepreneur who has managed the expansion of Wireless Toyz Cellular Superstores into national mega-chain status.

“Like any business you choose to run, you’ll be nurturing it for a long time,” says Simtob, “and nothing is worse than a marriage without love. Are you intimidated by technology and change? Then a telecommunications franchise is not for you.

“The second most important thing, is to have skills and a real liking for the daily operational tasks required in your selected business. If you hate dealing with people and problems, don’t choose a business in which success is predicated on being a good listener and inventive trouble-shooter. Don’t expect to change your basic character just because the money is good.”

Simtob sees this principle at work everyday at Wireless Toyz where he is responsible for the strategic direction and management of the organization’s franchise growth, as well as its technology, financial and business systems.

“Wireless Toyz is a good example where franchisees with passion for the business are typically more successful,” says Simtob, “we were founded on the realization that even knowledgeable consumers of wireless products and service are overwhelmed by rapid changes in technology, confused by too many choices and intimidated by ‘techie experts.’ A successful Wireless Toyz franchisee actually looks forward to every frustrated customer and unique problem that walks in the door. Patience is a plus, but what really characterizes our consistent sales leaders is a passion for solving problems, one customer at a time.”

Here are Simtob’s Top 10 criteria for choosing the right franchise – regardless of the businessperson’s temperament or personality type. Simtob emphasizes that this is not a definitive list by any means, but a good starting point. Legal considerations, for example, constitute an entire checklist in themselves:

1. Choose a business about which you are passionate. Do you believe in what you will be doing? If you love what you do, you’ll never “work” a day of your life.
2. Choose a business whose daily tasks align with things you like to do. Do you enjoy dealing with people, food, travel, coffee? Are you happy recruiting, managing and retaining employees? Make a list of likes and dislikes.
3. Can the dollar potential of the business meet your long-term financial goals?
4. Do the investment requirements and start-up costs fit within your budget? Is financing assistance offered? What is your risk tolerance?
5. Is the income potential – short and long term – sufficient for you and your family? Are royalty payments reasonable and designed for both the company and franchisee to profit? Is this is a true entrepreneurial opportunity to acquire wealth or just a repackaged “employment opportunity” and which do you want?
6. Assuming the product is superlative and demand has been established, is the franchise system itself a good one and based on a sound business strategy? Would you be comfortable executing that system?
7. Is the brand solid, recognizable and likely to lead to sales on its own strength?
8. Has the company been around long enough for most of the kinks to be worked out? Has the concept caught fire? Franchising is a business model in which being “in on the ground floor” is not always an advantage. Many never grow beyond a few units before they’re dust. Buying in too early can be risky, but also comes with rewards as a founding franchisee.
9. Are franchisees in the system allowed the level of autonomy and independence that you desire? Or will your business creativity be stifled at every turn? If you want maximum decision-making freedom, don’t consider a Mc-franchise. On the other hand, you may not like that feeling of twisting in the wind if there is minimal or no support. Consider the level of assistance you need for real estate, store layout and design, ongoing operational field support, business analysis, training manuals, marketing and advertising.
10. Knowing how to get into the deal is only half the equation. Is there an exit plan and separation strategies that are acceptable to you?

As President of Finance and Development of Wireless Toyz, Richard Simtob is responsible for the strategic direction and management of the organization’s franchise growth, as well as its technology, financial and business systems. Previously Chief Operating Officer, Simtob managed the expansion of the company’s franchise network through the opening of 66 new stores in 2006. His efforts were pivotal in earning Wireless Toyz recognition on Inc. Magazine’s “500 List” as one of the fastest growing privately held U.S. companies, is ranked No. 169 in the “Franchise 500,” No. 98 “Fastest-Growing Franchise” and No. 1 in the “Wireless Stores” and “Electronic Retail” categories for 2008 by Entrepreneur Magazine.

Prior to Wireless Toyz, Simtob earned acclaim as a business innovator during the 1990s when he co-founded Talking Book World Corporation, America’s largest chain of retail outlets specializing in renting audiobooks. He built the company from a concept in 1993 to a 45-store chain that, by 1999, ranked number 164 on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing privately held companies. Each year under his leadership Talking Book World was named among Entrepreneur’s top 500 franchises.

Previously he was co-founder and president of TINT KING, an automotive tint shop based in London, Ontario. Simtob oversaw the sales, production, accounting and computer systems for the venture and sold the business in 1996 when it was the number-one tint shop in southern Ontario. He has also provided his strategic planning, management, organization, franchising and sales expertise as a business consultant for a variety of retailers and business-to-business clients.

Simtob is a licensed Real Estate commercial broker and is involved in developing small retail commercial centers in Michigan and Arizona.

He is Vice President of Yad Ezra non-profit food bank and is active in a range of business organizations, including the Jewish Entrepreneurs Network and the Entrepreneurs Network of Michigan. He attended the University of Western Ontario, with a major in economics and business.

Terrace – Fresh Wonderful Restaurant in Bromley

One word comes to mind when talking about Terrace – fresh. This modest 30-seater is young, full of spirit and offers a great alternative to the usual onslaught of big-name dining franchises. Having opened only 3 months ago, it has quickly established itself in the bustling town centre of Bromley. If you’re looking for a relaxed, evening out experience, this should do just perfectly.

With a recent lick of paint, this restaurant has a real modern, minimalist style about it. Cream and beige with touches of oak dominate the interior. Dusk arrives, the lights are dimmed, the candles are glowing and there’s just one element left to fit this perfect equation – Jazz. The owner is a big Miles and Hancock fan, so you’ll be entertained the whole night through.

The fare is wonderful. An emphasis has been made on fish, and most importantly it’s always fresh and full of flavour. Following the alluring calamari entrée infused with a suitably unique vodka sauce and choice seasoning, why not savour the subtle, natural variety of grilled seafood; the silvery sea bream is cooked to a delicate touch, its flesh is juicy and meaty and comes with a highly complimentary serving of finely prepared parsnips, onions and a dash of lemon and parsley. The bass, salmon, mackerel and trout are also highly recommended. With a good selection of crisp white wines such as the Chardonnay and Pinot, your taste buds will be well and truly pampered.

The bar is certainly equipped for parties and holds a good variety of spirits for all your cocktail needs. All in all, Terrace’s prices are very reasonable, so you can afford to experiment with a range of dishes and find what suits you best.

Whilst vegetarians are well catered for (a good choice of salads, well-dressed and unpretentious and other Mediterranean specialties are on offer), meat eaters needn’t go home with an empty stomach. From a generous portion of steak, or the mouth-watering mixed grill, to a quick burger, Terrace really does have everything you could possibly need.

Terrace is located along the buzzing strip in Widmore Road, opposite the Glades Shopping Centre. Opening at 8 O’clock on weekdays (9 at the weekends), why not pop in for a coffee and pie in true American style? Got a corner to fill on a Sunday morning? You’re sorted – full English breakfast for a mere £5.55, and four alternatives for the indecisive. This really is home cooking at its best!

Fully equipped with air conditioning and child-friendly this restaurant exudes a certain sophistication, while also maintaining a down to earth, free for all raison d’être, welcoming all palettes. Good old classic dishes that make for a happy dining experience.

Terrace can cater for birthdays, wedding parties and other celebrations for up to 50 people. A custom cake service is even available – is there anything these maestros can’t do?! If you have questions about any aspect of their services or wish to make a reservation, you can contact the restaurant on 0208 466 5584.

Reflections: Family stories and memories

Family Traditions and Treasured moments

My family “had” and I say that with disappointment, many traditions and treasured moments which I thought would be passed down. Instead they have gradually vanished as time went by. These times are etched in my soul and I just wish they never died.

I’ll start with the first holiday New Years Eve. When I was a child my mother and father would go to a club to celebrate New Years. My aunt was the one that babysat for my mother. There were three of us I was the oldest, we asked my aunt if we could see the New Year in. She agreed only if we watched Guy Lombardo, and we did.

She would have snacks for us and soda. I always enjoyed my aunts company even as a child.

One of the special moments was when my aunt babysat us. We asked her if we could stay up late. She told us yes but we have to watch what she wanted to see on TV. Some of the shows were Kate Smith, Jackie Gleason, and Lawrence Welk. Even though she let us stay up we would always fall asleep before the shows were over.

The next special moment was when either my father, uncle, or grandfather would take us to the Butcher shop, the Butcher shops are now replaced by the big food franchises. While we were waiting for the cold cut order the Butcher would give us kids a piece of the cold cuts that were ordered. We always wanted to go just for the piece of cold cuts. Now when I get cold cuts the meat cutters do not offer a slice.

My family lived in my grandfather’s three family house. The first floor was my father’s uncle’s family, the second floor was my grandfather’s and we lived on the top. These are the Italian descendants, my father’s parents. Because my grandfather and grandmothers’ name were Joseph and Josephine we celebrated their name day which is March 19th , St. Joseph’s Day. There were special Italian foods that were eaten on that day.

During the Easter season my grandfather or uncle would take us kids in to the North End in Boston to Haymarket Square. There they took us to some of the churches, many shops, fruit stands and pastry shops. We got to try some of the pastries. While we were there our mothers, grandmother and aunt were preparing food for Easter. This was the day before Easter.

On Easter morning we would go to Nonno ( grandfather ) and Nonna’s ( grandmother’s ) house, my father’s parents, on the second floor for Easter breakfast. This consisted of hard boiled eggs that were done with easter dies, artichoke with liver, Italian easter

Should I be eating that fast food? – Part 2

Well that depends. Do you value your health as much as all of the other strong facets in your life? If that answer is yes then you’d naturally speed away Nascar style from the drive thru. Just imagine trillions of french fries in the form of zigzags descending from the sky…now wake up because its such unhealthy thoughts that you have to wipe clean and dry from your imagination.

Fast Food has such a hypnotizing effect on the mainstream American population it’s no wonder they soar in profits. Just think how many zombies would be marching their arms and feet forward towards a McDonalds in Toonsilvania while the owls howl sporadically? I wouldn’t know either. The main reason why many peoples minds fall prey towards fast food in the first place is because it’s Fast with a capital F! Preparing a juicy hamburger is the cheapest of all processes.

The beef and chicken patties are exported to the restaurant so all they have to do is just grill it up and then toss in the lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, and voila, the hamburger is served. It’s almost like preparing one yourself within a five minutes time span. And once you’ve gulped down one of these tender burgers hyena style, you’re bound to make effortless trips for the next subsequent days. What’s more. The trips will only begin to multiply and all of a sudden you’re at risk for obesity

“Obesity, huh?” asks the Hamburgler, “Obesity means all of the fat layers that you’ve developed around your body after smuggling and eating all of those hamburgers” says Dr. X. Well kids the hamburgler is a perfect example of as to why you guys shouldn’t be tiptoeing to a fast food restaurant late in the night. Fast food contains large amounts of trans fat which is known to cause weight gain.

In fact, various studies show that a meal consisting of a big juicy burger, fries, and a large coke equal approximately 1500 calories, which leads to about a 10% increase in body fat. Scary huh? Imagine how many workouts it will take to reduce that amount. But stop because it isn’t just the caloric intake information that startles people, what about the grease that piles up on the patty along with the hormones and other pesticides that aren’t removed prior to processing. It could happen. Neglecting this caloric intake information can eventually lead to heart disease as you age so it’s wise to simply stop eating fast food or to curtail your visits before things run out of hand. Anxiety and depression are two other major signs that present itself within you when you don’t listen to your nutritionist so beware!

On a final note it would be splendid if parents condemned their children from happy meals. After all wouldn’t it be wise to promote good health early on. Happy meals are nothing but scams that these fast food giants pull in racking up profits. This will give the adults more reasons to go and they only stroke their healths in the process. It’s all in the marketing so educate your kids in the hazards of eating such foods and instead feed them foods like brocolli and spinach, so this way the next time Ronald McDonald says JUMP the kids will fire their toy pistols at him.

There is, however, a such thing as a hearthrob fast food restaurant. Take Subway and Quizons for instance. These two rank among the top franchises in the U.S. This is because their menus profit our health. And the sexiest part is that it’s still Fast with a capital F! So why don’t you steer you’re mind away from a McDonalds or Burger King and steer it towards a local Subway or Quiznos so this way you can get your moneys’, times’, and healths’ worth.

Comparing Chinese and Indian food

Chinese food, by all means are not straight vegetables that hold all the vitamins and minerals that a healthy person would want. At the same time many Fast food chinese chains do seem to contain a lot of grease, oil and fat in certain foods. Although, that is in the industry franchises that really give chinese food the less than healthy name. Where as, I cook my own chinese and indian cuisine. I find that homemade chinese and indian cuisine is a lot less fatty and greasy. If anything the only true differences that chinese and indian ethnic cooking proves is that Chinese cuisine tends to use more noodles and does not have a restriction (For religious proposes) on what types of meat is used. Chinese cuisine also very rarely uses curry or cumin in their cooking. Indian Cuisine does not use pork due to religious beliefs, and mainly uses curry and cumin.

The really differences come in the seasonings and in what is allowed to be cooked. If that is all that there is then maybe recipes for chinese and indian cuisine is needed to be found and tried. I also want to state that Chinese use rice with everything because it is the most affordable and indian cuisine uses naan bread. Both as a startch in the meal. If that is not two world that have great tastes I don’t know what is.

Is A Video Business Card Franchise For You?

Successful small businesses and small business franchises are built upon a number of key principles and ideas, none of which is more important that making future clients or customers aware of you, your business and the product that you are selling or the service that you are providing. It’s why many companies spend millions upon millions of dollars on advertising every year creating some catchy jingle, shocking commercial, or trendy slogan that will promote name and product recognition. Why? Because people tend to trust and buy what they are familiar with, have heard about, and recognize.

So how does a small business owner or small business franchise compete with the advertising market of multi-million dollar corporations? They create circles of relationships and business contacts and familiarize people with who they are and what they provide. Most of this you probably already know if you have an interest in franchises and becoming a franchise owner. But what you may have overlooked is the importance of products and services that help other small businesses and franchises to promote and personalize their product or service. If this idea is intriguing to you, it may be time to consider looking into a Video Business Card Franchise.

What gives a small business the edge is being recognized as innovative, creative, and recognizable. The Video Business Card provides just that to your customers. The video business card is a biz-card size CD. It still fits in the wallet, pocketbook, purse, or pocket, and can fit into any regular CD drive of any computer and will auto-start making it simple and easy for recipients of the video business card to be able to conveniently view the content on the business card. What better way to create customer awareness and familiarization with the business owner, realtor, or service provider, than for the future client to be able to view a personalized video message of the business card owner explaining the specifics of the product or service he or she provides, and the benefits of using his or her particular business?

So how to you create and manufacture a Video Business Card? That is the exact question that you will be able to answer as an owner of one of the most unique franchise opportunities currently available. The Infinite Marketing Distributorship Franchise offers the opportunity for the entrepreneur to sell and distribute these Video Business Cards without the need to create video production or produce biz-card size CD’s. They provide training and support for the franchise owner and the liquid capital required matches the total investment of $17,500 to begin your franchise distributorship today. The price of video technology is rapidly becoming more and more realistic for many businesses and the biz-size CD can be produced for less cost than the typical 4-8 page brochure, and the beauty of the card is that along with a personalized video message the customer can include a 4-8 page brochure that each client can print directly from their own computer while viewing the Video Business Card.

Franchise Your Business The Right Way And Only Pay As You Go

The key to achieving substantially more sales and wealth is to Franchise Your Business the correct way. Franchising can be a very intimidating and pricey process. Franchisors can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, and then fail because they lack the proper structure and systems necessary to succeed – nobody showed them. The solution is to break the process down into three simple goals: Structure, systems/support materials and training. The costs are extremely low because they are part of the process. Another element involved in making Franchise Opportunities feasible for companies, is for the Franchise Consultant to be sensitive to a business’ need to minimize expenses.

A Franchise Expert that offers a Pay As You Go program can create a tremendous advantage and opportunity to a business wanting to franchise. Very simply, this shifts the risk to the franchise development company to perform for the business wanting to franchise without the franchisor being out of pocket lots of cash up front. Even though franchise opportunities abound, good, quality Franchising Help can prove elusive. A good Franchising Advisor, and especially one that will work with you on a Pay As You Go program where you only pay for the services you are receiving currently, is crucial to your success as a franchisor.

In general, people want to own a business without thinking; therefore owning a Franchise is the conduit for many entrepreneurs because franchises are business systems that are easily duplicated. Typically, many business owners spend their own money opening up satellite offices and hiring employees who do not even care about the business- to run it. Their logic is that this is the best way to control growth and keep the consistency and uniformity of their product or service. However, if you can get the same results – why not use the resources of an entrepreneur who has skin in the game, to use his/her own money to brand their business without having the out of pocket expenses?

To create franchise wealth, you have to leverage your efforts while minimizing costs.

If you are a business owner and really want to expand your business, you should take a serious look at Franchising. The Franchising Information below can greatly assist you in starting the process of Franchising Your Business. This information can also be utilized by entrepreneurs wishing to talk to businesses about franchising. In short, you will better understand just how EASY and SIMPLE it is for businesses to expand through franchising. It is all about structure and systems.

Structure refers to Disclosures. Franchise systems are regulated by Federal and State agencies requiring a set of disclosures intended to protect the applicant. These disclosures are collectively known as the UFOC (Uniform Franchise Offering Circular). When you work with a good Franchise Consultant, they prepare this document for you, customizing it for your particular business, adding provisions to protect you while assisting you in defining your Franchise structure. The UFOC also houses the Franchise Agreement. As the UFOC is a summary of what an applicant should expect – the franchise agreement in comparison is the UFOC on steroids. Every detail is threaded through the Franchise agreement covering items such as: investment expectations, fees, restrictions on products/services a franchisee can offer, multi area marketing programs and responsibilities of franchisee/franchiser. A Franchising Expert / Advisor works with clients to define these items while incorporating provisions that do not commit the Franchisor, but allows for options in the future. For example, a business may feature a document which states: Franchisor may form a franchisee elected franchise advisory council whose purpose is to determine how national advertising monies are spent.

Systems refer to what has been developed in the business and presented in an organized fashion to the Franchisee. This is what the Franchisor provides to Franchisees by way of reference materials. And of course a Franchise Expert makes this EASY. A good Franchise Development Consultant will provide clients with template versions of an Operations Manual, Pre Opening manual and various other supporting pieces intended to systemize and structure their business operations in a cookie cutter format. For example: The operations manual for a non-restaurant business contains over 330 pages. A Franchising Expert / Advisor will require their client to customize the operations manual with their company name, logo and add the “meat & potatoes” of their business into the various sections- all the proprietary stuff. For example, most clients will take the marketing/advertising section of the Operations Manual and make every marketing piece they have ever used into a template format ready to be used by future franchisees in their area.

Taking all these pieces together, including the UFOC and reference materials, allows enough cross-pollination to nicely create a training/orientation program/discovery day. By utilizing the structure of the franchise system (UFOC), the Operations Manual and Pre-Opening manual, a Franchising Expert can work with clients to determine what items to focus on when training Franchisees. After all, an entrepreneur who invests a large sum of $$ to brand their business must be able to run with it immediately after training. A good way to go about this is to create an outline of the training/orientation program, complimented by a PowerPoint presentation. The training and orientation program can be broken down into modules so it can be easily moved around and tailored to the audience. For example: A Franchise Consultant could create a 3-day training program with each day broken down into modules. If, for example, a franchisee needed more attention on the administrative functions in day two of training, they could simply move the next scheduled module around with the second half of administrative module of day three so they could spend more time on that area without losing momentum and without jeopardizing the timeline.

Structure, systems and training are the key ingredients for a successful Franchise system. As a potential Franchisor, you will need good tools and consistent information streams so you can impart what you learn and let it Create Franchise Wealth for you. And for those vendors, who wish to work with many Franchisors to assist in their franchise business, remember that about 85%-90% of franchisees use the same vendor for services that their Franchisor uses.

As you contemplate Franchising Your Business, here are some questions you can consider to see if Franchising is the right tool for expanding your operation.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to expand without having to worry about capital outlay and having to hire employees?”

Customers who you have heard say they would like to see another one of these in other areas.

“Have any of them ever indicated that they would like to own one of these?”

Just remember that a Franchise Consultant will take the intimidation out of the process of Franchising Your Business. A good consultant will take it one step at a time by providing Structure and creating systems and training programs needed to successfully duplicate your business. If a Franchise Consultant can also allow you to “pay as you go” so you don’t have large upfront costs, then it will probably make sense to let that qualified Franchise Expert create Franchise Wealth for YOU.

Franchise Opportunities – Get Yourself The Right Kind Of Business Opportunity

When we think of business franchise opportunities, we think of a licensed method of doing business paying a certain fee to the “franchisor”, in lieu of getting rights to conducting the business. This is a proven method of increasing a business chain, and giving opportunities to many entrepreneurs who become the “franchisee” and in turn help in expanding the business chain, or the likes. Many international business chain owners often franchise their retail chain to franchisees in various other countries, this not only helps their business grow vertically, but also allows for lateral growth wherein their businesses are regionalized and diversified. Franchise opportunities provide small scale entrepreneurs achieve great heights, with the franchising rights to a certain business.

There are immense opportunities in the world of business franchise, and as more and more small to medium scale businesses plan their growth, they allow for their businesses to be legally franchised. There are several kinds of business franchise opportunities, including product franchising and trade name franchising along with other variants that may sell over certain rights to the franchisee and not all rights originally reserved for the company. In certain franchise opportunities, the franchisee is given the rights to conducting the original business practice of the company, but no rights to conducting their own business, that is they are not given rights to additional profits, this is called product franchising. This method is adopted by many international companies who want to make their presence felt in overseas countries, but not necessarily want to diversify.

A franchisor earns royalties from the franchisee, and this is a beneficial mode of income for the mother company. The various franchise opportunities that attract small and independent entrepreneurs may include anything from retail chains, cosmetic companies, food outlets, vending machines, training companies, etc. The business franchise opportunities for an entrepreneur and for the parent company are endless. The tried and tested method of doing a certain business, allows for the quick setting up of a new business franchise, and this saves a lot of time and training required for the franchisee to set up the same. The hugely successful food chain McDonalds, Subway, and Starbucks in USA, have excelled in the world of franchise opportunities, and many companies in developing countries are trying to expand their businesses in the same manner. The fast growing economies of India and China see a lot of indigenous companies expand their wares through business franchise opportunities, for example Venky’s chain of food stores in India.

In many countries such as India and Russia among others, business franchise opportunities are provided by the franchise associations, which help the entrepreneur in locating the best franchise opportunities. Today, the world of business franchise has also adopted social franchise opportunities, which help the poorer sections of society, take up a franchise and start a small scale business. Many countries such as Germany and the UK have helped provide franchise opportunities to the less privileged of their societies, like the CAP markets in Germany. These are great ways of helping a lot of deserving people, in the spirit of business.
